Gospel poverty is not a vow to be poor, but a commitment to live in intimacy with Jesus, detachment from the things of this world and to be actively involved in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with the poor, marginalized, and unwanted.  In this way, poverty is understood as self-denial for the purpose of serving God by serving others thus living out the demands of the good news of Jesus Christ.
